Andrejev 1913-ben kezd dolgozni a darabon. Szeptemberben írja egy levelében: „Úgy két hét múlva kész lesz a darab; na-a-a-agyon különös valami”. „Furcsa egy darab ez, magam is tátott szájjal állok előtte – és én még csak a szerző vagyok!”. 1916. júniusában közli, hogy a Kutyakeringőt befejezte és hogy „ez hatalmas valami (szerintem)”. Elkezdődik a Moszkvai Művész Színházzal a tárgyalás a darab előadásáról. A színház vezetői (Meyerhold) úgy találták, hogy ez a dráma „provokálja a közönséget”. Andrejev ezzel egyetértett: „lényegét illetően is, és formáját tekintve is, ez provokál.” „A Kutyakeringő olyan darab, ami körül nagy kutyavonyítás kezdődik. „Hatalmas szerepek, de mindössze négy ilyen van benne. A díszlet: két fillér. Minden más csupán: a színház művészete, a játék, a tehetség, az ember... De hát mi nem kabarettisták vagyunk! Éles, nyugtalan, felizgatja, összezavarja a polgárt? – de hát ez a mi művészetünk.” „A Kutyakeringő azonosítja az embereket és a világot a táncoló kiskutyákkal, amelyeket valaki pórázon rángat – lehet, hogy ez aljasság, de semmiképp sem egyszerű és bugyuta idétlenség”.  
A darabot végül 1920-ban, Andrejev halála után mutatja be a Pokazatyelnij tyeatr.
